Seventeen's Guide To Guys

by: Melissa Daly

All the cute, sweet,(or scary) stuff you need to know before you date a guy who’s 15, 17, 19, 21—or anywhere in between!

Guys At Age 15

THE 15-YEAR-OLD GUY IS:
1. romantic: Since he probably hasn’t been jaded by many bad relationships before you, he’ll be especially sweet, genuine, and unguarded.

2. just plain psyched: He still can’t believe his luck that a girl actually agreed to go out with him. Enjoy the adoration!

3. new at this: Sure, he's a little inexperienced. But it's nice that there is no pressure for you to be the perfect girlfriend, since he's still figuring stuff out, just like you are.

4. a bit clueless He doesn’t always know the right thing to do or say in tricky situations, so he can sometimes come off as hurtful.

DATING CHECKLIST
  • make a move He likely hasn’t learned to recognize subtle flirting yet. If he’s not getting it, leak it to a mutual friend that you like him. (Immature? Who cares? It works!)
  • dodge the no-driving problem Plan dates so that you can be dropped off at only one place the whole time. Pick a spot where there is a bunch of stuff to do: the mall, promenade, downtown strip, or a park.
  • show him the ropes If he’s not the perfect boyfriend yet, you can help him get it right—15-year-old guys are especially open to getting tips and advice from you. Guide him with compliments: "I love it when you call just to say hi—you should do it more often."

THE 17-YEAR-OLD GUY IS:
1. sensitive: He may not always show it, but he cares about his relationships just as much as you do. Rest assured: He sees you as more than just a makeout partner. Although—lucky you—he’s also become…

2. a better kisser Thanks to girlfriends past, he’s learned a thing or two.

3. more open with you He’s slowly getting that it’s okay to reveal his feelings and ask for your support. Encourage him by doing the same.

4. self-absorbed Spending time as a couple may take a backseat to his barkada, sports, and/or PlayStation marathons.

Guys at Age 19
DATING CHECKLIST
  • get to know him Use what you both have going on as a way to bond. Talk about the cool stuff happening in his life and yours, whether it concerns school, your career plans, or your future dream jobs.
  • flirt online He’s more tuned into your signals now, so get a fun, sexy IM or text volley going. It’s the perfect prelude to a date—sometimes, it’s just as good!
  • go one-on-one While it’s cool to hang with your friends, now that you’re older—and not dependent on your parents to drive you everywhere—nongroup dates can help you get even closer. Take advantage of your license, and plan a special night for only the two of you.
